Masterclass – Update & refresh your technical Skills

Wind Power Generation with Siemens, 13 November - Siemen’s Energy Service Training Centre in Newcastle delivers training to many technician and engineering staff at the company. The centre has dedicated areas containing wind, steam and gas turbines and generator technology, where employees and apprentices are trained in an environment closely resembling that which they will experience in the field. The day will offer talks on the current energy market, the next development phase for wind farms and the skills requirements. Cyber Security with Bournemouth University, 19 November 2 – Meet the experts at BU’s cyber security unit to understand some of the current and future security and assurance issues facing the UK.  This Masterclass will bring together researchers and lecturers at the university, industry and military experts to talk on cyber insecurity, information assurance, ethical hacking and digital forensics.  There will be valuable and unique insights from industrial perspectives on best practices in companies, and also on pathways for learners, including a session on what students need on their CVs and professional requirements. Solid Wall Insulation with Rockwool, Bridgend, 26 November - The solid wall insulation industry is predicted to grow exponentially over the coming years on the back of specific government policies (Green Deal and Energy Companies Obligation) targeted at promoting the uptake of this retrofit measure. This Masterclass will provide an excellent opportunity to hear first-hand about the market developments from one of the UK's leading manufacturers and suppliers of solid wall insulation products. Skills for Composites with National Composites Centre (NCC), 10 December - In November 2009 the Government launched the UK Composites Strategy. This highlights the importance of composites to the future of UK manufacturing and the Government's plans for ensuring that the UK has the means to succeed in intensely competitive global markets. A key part of this strategy is the establishment of the National Composites Centre (NCC). This Masterclass, held at the NCC in Bristol, will provide an excellent opportunity to hear and see first-hand about the design and rapid manufacture of composites. Power Industry Training with Lincoln University, 16 December – The first new engineering department in the UK for 20 years includes a dedicated space for the Siemens Turbomachinery training centre to address the requirements of the power and new ‘green engineering’ sectors by creating the engineers of the future. This Masterclass will offer you a chance to see the new Engineering Hub and the training centre for Siemens.  Facilities on show includes large industrial gas 5-15MW turbines and advanced manufacturing equipment such as 3-d printing and laser machinery.  Click here for more information or to book.

Skills for Aerospace with Marshall Aerospace & Defence Group, 17 December - The space industry in the UK is a small but growing sector - highly specialist and demanding of good technical skills, with opportunities for FE to engage. This event held at the Marshall AeroAcademy offers a chance to see aviation technologies up close. The day will include an update on training in the sector and the collaborative approach by key employers, such as FlyBe and Virgin Atlantic, in developing joint working on the skills sets that are fundamental and necessary to the industry.
