Rapid Testing for Food Safety

Date: 21 February 2013 : 08:00 - 14:00

This Masterclass is a full day hands-on workshop at the university’s Riverside Innovation Centre that will provide attendees with an overview of the technologies involved in Rapid Testing for Food Safety & Quality Assurance. The University of Chester has key expertise in nanotechnology relevant to food. Relevance to industry will be stressed throughout the workshop and industry experts will be at the event to speak of current practice in industry.

Rapid testing technologies provide an opportunity for cheap, simple, on-site testing in the workplace by staff with limited technical expertise. This is of benefit to organisations that do not have in–house laboratory facilities, facilitating a greater adoption of monitoring procedures to assess the effectiveness of hazard control procedures and ultimately protecting the consumer.

Economic benefits include avoidance of the significant costs associated with product recall and loss of consumer confidence, whilst the technologies associated with rapid test development are applicable to many additional areas such as biomedicine and environmental protection.

Who should attend?

The day will illustrate the full potential of this technology and is aimed at FE lecturers and curriculum managers in food technology and science. It is particularly suitable for:

  • Lecturers and Curriculum Managers in science, biology, nanotechnology and other subjects related to food science.
  • Business Development Staff engaging with employers in the food industry.
  • Anyone interested in updating their knowledge of cheap and simple rapid testing technologies.

About the hosts
